Position Description

Systems Engineer II

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, located on the North Shore of Long Island, is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer II with a solid understanding of the Linux operating system to join our IT Department.

Responsibilities will include administering a complex site alone or assisting in the administration of a larger site. Initiating new responsibilities and helping to develop plans for the future of the site/network. Evaluating and/or recommending critical IT purchases; ability to appropriately recommend and influence the purchasing process. Performing weekend on-call functions. Performing additional IT related tasks, as assigned by management.

Position Requirements

Required Skills

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of training users in applications and operating system fundamentals and writing basic documentation.
- Highly skilled with most operating system commands/utilities.
- Familiarity with most basic system administration tools and processes; for example, can boot/shut down a machine, add and remove user accounts, use backup programs and fsck or chkdsk, maintain system database files (groups, hosts, aliases, usermanager).
- Has a fundamental understanding of Linux-based operating systems and Windows Server operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions).
- Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; working knowledge of NFS/SMB/FTP/SSH & HTTP; authentication via OpenLDAP and Active Directory; configure and administer DHCP and DNS; manage multiple domains; understands basic routing concepts.
- Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (e.g., BASH, Python, Ruby, etc.).

Required Background

- Two years of college or equivalent post-high school education or experience.
- One to three years of system administration experience.

Desirable Background and Skills

- A degree in computer science or a related field
- Significant programming background in any applicable language
- Motivated to advance in the profession
- Stays current with changes in the industry, and their ramifications to the organization
- Familiarity with virtual machine management (e.g., VMWare, Xen, KVM, etc.)
- Familiarity with configuration management (e.g., Puppet, Chef, Ansible, etc.)
- Experience configuring and maintaining server monitoring infrastructure
- Familiarity with container and container orchestration (e.g., Docker, Rkt, Swarm, Fleet, Kubernetes, etc.)

Appropriate Responsibilities

- Receives general instructions for new responsibilities from supervisor.
- Administer a small, uniform site alone or assists in the administration of a larger site.
- Performs additional IT related tasks, as assigned by management.
